Boutique Hospitality Identity

The Sweetgrass Hotel

Logo Development and Design Evolution

Rooted in the artistry of the Gullah Geechee people, the identity system draws from the intricate craft of sweetgrass basket weaving. The mark references the seedheads of the sweetgrass plant, forms that signal transition and renewal along the coast. As the plant completes one life cycle, new growth begins, echoing the way traditions and stories are handed down and transformed over time.

While the seedhead emblem functions as a secondary graphic in the system, it carries the emotional weight of a primary mark. It stands in for more than a decorative icon, serving as a symbol of heritage, resilience, and quiet rebirth for a hotel that wants to feel like a place you return to, not just a place you stay once.

Wordmark Logo Concept

The logotype uses Cerulya CF in its original form. Its gentle terminals and subtle curves echo the movement of coastal grasses, creating a connection to the shoreline without resorting to cliches. Paired with Avenir, chosen for its clarity and balance, the typography system keeps the brand grounded. Together they create a tone that is refined but not stiff, and welcoming without feeling overly casual.

This pairing also gives the system enough range for both hospitality and operations. Cerulya CF carries the emotional voice of the brand in headlines and signage, while Avenir supports wayfinding, menus, and digital interfaces where readability matters most.

Symbols and Secondary Marks

The symbol set expands the identity beyond a single logo. A radiant sun mark reinforces the feeling of warmth, morning light, and coastal glow, while the grass blade icon captures the movement and texture of the marsh landscape. These marks appear on signage, key cards, amenity kits, and print materials as subtle reminders of place.

By treating these symbols as part of a small, shared visual vocabulary, the system can scale into patterns, borders, and wayfinding elements without losing its connection to the original idea of sweetgrass as living, moving material.

Natural Color Expression

The Sweetgrass palette is drawn from the coast at golden hour: warm light, deep shadow, and the muted neutrals of sand and woven fiber. Together, these colors are meant to feel like a quiet luxury, not a loud resort. They support both intimate interior spaces and bold exterior applications.

Brand Applications

The Sweetgrass brand system is designed to evoke a sense of place, heritage, and modern elegance across every guest touchpoint. From the first ad a traveler sees to the letterhead in their room, the goal is a consistent visual voice that still leaves room for intimate moments and personal detail.

Applications lean on generous negative space, warm photography, and typography that can carry both poetic taglines and practical information. The system is flexible enough for print campaigns, on property collateral, and digital experiences without losing its core character.

Digital and Marketing Applications

The Sweetgrass identity extends into digital with the same care given to print. Layouts are built on generous margins, legible type scales, and restrained animation so that the brand still feels like a place to breathe, not another crowded interface.

Social and campaign assets use the secondary marks and color fields as flexible building blocks. This keeps the work recognizable even when the logo is not present, an important test for any hospitality brand competing in a busy visual landscape.
